Diamond retailers often refer to the 4 C's: Cut, Carat, Color, and Clarity.

• Cut is the most important of the four C's. It is not unusual for two diamonds with equal carat (weight), color, and clarity to be valued at vastly different levels due of their cut. The cut determines how a diamond reflects light, and thus, how brightly it will sparkle.

• the Color of the stone can vary from virtually colorless, the most valuable, to a yellowish-brown tint.

• Clarity refers to the frequency of internal marks, or blemishes, called inclusions, in a stone. Carity is determined based on the size, location, and number of the inclusions. Ideally the diamond has few, if any, visible inclusions.

• finally the Carat, a measurement of weight, is rated on a scale of "points", with one carat equal to 100 points. Thus 1/2 ct. = 50 points, 1 ct = 100 points, and so on. Though this is commonly believed to be the most important aspect to consider in determining a diamonds value, it is really only a small part.
